Who’s to blame for our current crises

America has never been able to learn from its past. Americans learn by experience, and when the experience fades, it seems the knowledge from previous experiences seems to go away as well. During the Gilded Age (1880s-1901) Americans lived and worked in the worst of conditions, with the government protecting the wealthy business owners and turning their backs on the working class. Theodore Roosevelt came into the presidency with the death of William Mckinley and began the progressive era, bringing about social and economic reform, favoring the middle and lower classes and giving them safe working conditions, better housing, and better pay. Then, in 1980, Ronald Reagan was elected. During his presidency, he preached a theory of “Reaganomics,” cutting taxes for the wealthy and deregulating industries. The income of the upper class sky-rocketed, while the middle and lower classes incomes stayed the same, while inflation made the cost of living grow, pushing many out of the middle class and into the lower class. At the beginning of the Era of Conservative belief in Reaganomic policies, recession occured in 1982 and during the presidency of George H.W. Bush. Clinton, when he was elected in 1992, reversed the former policy of Reagan and raised the taxes again; the economy flourished and actually had a surplus in the federal budget. Then, for some explicable reason, George W. Bush brought back Reaganomics in his 2 terms as president. The result? Economic recession bordering on Depression, massive government debt…who do we have to blame? who was truly at fault? Well, I would say Reagan but he never was really in charge of his presidency, was he
